Adjuster license
Each state differs in its requirements for obtaining an insurance license. In general, obtaining an insurance adjuster license requires that you take some classes and pass exams to test your knowledge in the field of insurance.
Here are some commonly asked questions about becoming an insurance adjuster:
What do I do to become an adjuster?Register for an adjuster licensing class, then take an adjusters claims handling class such as introduction to property or auto.
Will my license be all I need to handle claims?
In most cases no, most people want a solid base for handling claims, which is why an introduction class is recommended. Think of this as handing a drivers license to someone who has never driven, don't you want some additional training for them before they come down the road towards you in another car?
How long will all of this take?
On average, 10 days to gain the base needed for heading into the field, however, it can take several weeks for a true understanding of claims handling.
If I have a license can I be hired for claims handling?
Yes, but most companies will want to continue your training process.
My friend has been hired by a company and will train me, should I go?
If you have a license, having a trained professional for field training is always beneficial to the learning process.
I have a background in a field such as construction, should I take the training course also?
Having such a background is very good on a resume, but this type of experience is usually limited and additional training is highly recommended.
Will I be hired once I am licensed and trained?
Most training centers are just training centers, have no authority over the hiring of adjusters. However, training centers will always strive to help students in the networking processes needed for hiring.
How much will all of this cost me?
Excluding the costs involved for training, this depends on how much you may have already such as a laptop computer, printer, digital camera etc. If you are starting without any of these items, expect to spend upwards of $3,000 to get started.
